About 20 Deep Winery
20 Deep is a family-run winery in Mendon, New York, roughly 15-20 minutes south of Rochester, with a relaxed, come-as-you-are atmosphere the owners describe as "a winery with brewery vibes." The name comes from the way mature grapevines send their roots about twenty feet into the ground - a nod to the founders' commitment to putting down roots and building something lasting in their community. No appointment is needed; walk-ins are always welcome, and the space is designed for gathering, lingering, and sharing a bottle with friends and family.
The estate began in 2019, when the team planted its first vines on six acres of sandy Mendon soil. After weathering pandemic-era setbacks and a frost that killed most of the young vineyard, they replanted, bottled their first vintage in 2021, and opened the tasting room in 2022. Today the roughly 6.5-acre estate vineyard grows Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Gruner Veltliner, and Saperavi, with everything poured in the tasting room grown and crafted on-site.
20 Deep has made Gamay Noir its signature grape, championing the variety as a natural fit for the Finger Lakes' cool climate and producing it in a range of styles from bright rose to sparkling pet-nat to barrel-aged red. Guests can sip flights indoors or on the covered patio, enjoy live music and rotating food trucks on Friday nights, and spend the afternoon with lawn games, a gas fire pit, and vineyard views. Leashed dogs and kids are both welcome.
