About Rasta Ranch Vineyards
Rasta Ranch Vineyards sits on the east shore of Seneca Lake along Route 414 in Hector, where the lake's deep water softens the winters enough for vines to survive. The family that founded it in 1993 still runs it, and the tasting room is a restored 1860s barn done up in tie-dye, peace signs and rock-and-roll memorabilia, with wine names to match: Purple Haze, Whiter Shade of Pale, Grateful Red. Around thirty acres of farmland surround the winery, including a ten-acre vineyard planted in memory of family members.
This is Finger Lakes wine at its most unpretentious, leaning on the region's older American and hybrid grapes rather than vinifera. A sweet Concord red called Uncle Homer's Red is the flagship, Terry's Teaser is a semi-sweet Diamond white with a peachy edge, and a perfumed dry Catawba shows what a labrusca grape can do when it is not made sweet. Vinifera turns up in the drier reds: a Cabernet Franc built on dark blackberry fruit, and Grateful Red, a soft, earthy half-and-half of Baco Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon; Seneca Rain is the crisp, bone-dry white.
Tastings are poured as flights or by the glass with no booking needed, alongside craft cocktails, local beer and, by season, wine slushies or mulled wine. Local cheeses, smoked meats and chocolates are on hand, and the deck, gazebo and lawn come with hula hoops, lawn games and bubbles, so families are clearly expected. Live music is the real draw: Monday Night Blues and Sunday Sessions run through the warmer months, and a juried Sip & Shop craft market takes over the grounds on the third Sunday of each month in season.
